During the process of looking up information on the neighborhood, we often come across pictures
in magazines and photographs that could be of homes in Memorial Bend. For example, House & Home
Magazine often featured internal architectural details from William N. Floyd homes in their issues.
Who better to identify the homes in the photographs than the homeowners themselves?
Feel free to review the following and help us identify if any of these pictures are from Memorial Bend.
- The curved wall on Memorial - Just east of 12835 Memorial is an overgrown empty lot with
the faint remnants of a driveway and a mysterious curved wall. What used to be on this lot?
- Better Homes & Gardens, April 1960 - This Mondrian-style door was located in a home
on the east side of the Beltway. While the door is long gone, does this look like your entry? Floyd
explained to me that the homeowner wanted a Mondrian-style door and that it took him over fifty
sketches to get it "just right".
- House & Home Magazine, July 1957 - The picture is dark and the inlaid vinyl floor
is probably gone but the fireplace is probably still there. Identified as the Jim Wilkerson home.
- House & Home Magazine, July 1959 - Both pictures are from Floyd homes. The light
fixture was probably used in several houses as Floyd told me he worked with glassmakers in Murano
to create a dozen light fixtures for his homes. I have no idea if this is one of them.
- House & Home Magazine, July 1959 - Mosaic countertops like this one were a common feature
in many Floyd homes. So far, I've found 3 homes that still have them. Does yours?
- House & Home Magazine, July 1959 - This picture is dark and could be one of two
homes located on Kimberley in nearby Memorial Plaza. Floyd bought a block of lots in Memorial
Plaza and designed what was promoted as "Houston's Contemporary Center" and "Houston's One Block Long Idea Street".
