May 2021 Mod of the Month

May 16, 2021
8126 Glen Valley Drive, Glenbrook Valley, Houston, TX 77061

Houston Mod invites you to join us this Sunday,
May 16th for a Mod of the Month open house event from 2:00-4:00 PM.

Masks are required to be worn for this event.
Please resist touching surfaces and maintain 6 feet of social distancing

Please help find new preservation-minded owners for these vintage modern houses in the Glenbrook Valley Historic District, located approximately 8 miles southeast of downtown Houston.

In 2011, after a three year struggle, the neighborhood of 1,256 houses was designated the city’s first historic district outside of the loop 610 freeway and is believed to be the largest mid-century era residential historic district in the United States. It is within Harris County and served by the Houston Independent School District. While visiting, note the recent nifty vintage-styled neighborhood entrance markers, extensively landscaped recreational medians along Broadway and the many newly reconstructed streets with new utilities throughout the area.

This substantial 1955 mod-leaning ranch style house, complete with a separate guest house, is located on a one third plus acre site in one of the best shaded areas of the Glenbrook Valley Historic District.  Note the deluxe roman brick exterior, spacious room sizes, ribbed glass kitchen cabinet doors and vintage baths with pristine vintage tile. This house will be open until 5 PM on Sunday.

The family who built this house in 1958 still owns it and remembers it was designed by an architect.  Hopefully this information can be verified. Other attributes, like its prominent location on one of the areas most attractive streets loaded with other great houses, are undisputable. Many of the original elements and finishes remain intact so the vintage mid-century design intent is evident.  Note the abundance of unpainted wood and custom cabinetry, deluxe bathrooms, unpainted interior brick walls, vintage colored concrete floors and some original light fixtures.

If you have more information about these, or other vintage modern houses and/or architects, please contact Houston Mod so we can include it in our Modern Houston Index on our new website.
