Built in 1958, the Kelsey House was widely recognized as one of the most important houses built in Texas that year. The house received the First Honor Award for Residences in Texas Architecture at the State Fair of Texas and was featured in Architectural Record with an article called “Privacy, Spaciousness Mark Texas House” in February, 1959.
The article discusses that the plan of the rectangular house was based on the requirements of privacy and spaciousness for a family of six. The house employed an open plan, a very private street side and all glass rear façade. Upon entering the house, to the right is an open-air courtyard, which is reminiscent of the Menil House. Walking through another door takes you into the house proper and the sixty foot long living/dining room which are separated by a tall bookcase. The living room side has a large hearth and fireplace. Exposed brick walls are used in the dining room and living rooms as well as the master bedroom. The comparatively small master bedroom is situated as far as possible away from the children’s rooms because the kids were already 10-16 years old at the time the house was built. A wood planked deck, swimming pool, and dense woods round out this beautiful, timeless, and historic Houston home.
